Mary J. Blige: Career began in the church choir

When Mary J. Blige’s father, a jazz musician, left the family, she moved back to New York with her mother and siblings into council housing. At the age of seven she sang the solo part in the local church choir. Mary J. Blige continued to love music as a teenager, but began experimenting with drugs when she was 15. In 1988, at the age of 17, she recorded her first demo tape. Mary J. Blige also had success with this and became the first woman to be signed to the music label “Uptown Records” and began working with producer Puff Daddy.
